Disclosure regarding the use of cookies

The Worldbeeday web portal (hereinafter: the Portal) uses cookies in order to ensure smooth operation. Cookies are files that are stored on the user's device used to gain access to the web portal. With cookies, unique data about the user or the settings selected by the user on a particular website are stored.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that most websites store in devices used to access the internet, with the purpose of recognising individual devices used to gain access. Their storage is fully supervised by the user’s browser – users may restrict or disable the storing of cookies as they wish.

What do cookies do?

In web-based interactions the use of online cookies is common and desired. They enable a higher level of services, such as storing registration confirmations, using online stores, preventing excessive displays of advertising banners, etc. Without cookies, it would be impossible to measure the number of visits to a website. Cookies are essential for providing user-friendly services. Thanks to cookies, interactions between web users and the website is faster and easier. They also enable the website to remember the user’s preferences and experiences and therefore save time as well as make web browsing more efficient and friendly.

Some specific examples of the reasons cookies are used:

  • to achieve a better user experience of the website, we adjust the content display according to past visits;
  • to save selections when creating a shortlist of devices, offers, and a comparison thereof;
  • in sections of websites where login is required, they keep you logged in;
  • to identify the device used (computer, tablet, mobile phone), enabling the adjustment of the content display to suit the device;
  • to track the visits, which allows to verify the effectiveness of content display, the relevancy of ads and to continuously improve the website;
  • cookies are also essential for the functioning of certain services (e.g. online banks, online shops, other forms of e-commerce, etc.).

How to manage cookies

Users always have full control over cookies, since they can delete, limit or completely disable them at any time. Instructions on how to do this depend on the device and are available on the homepage of each software manufacturer. It is therefore you who decides whether you will allow the storage of cookies on your device. You can control and change the settings for cookies in your web browser.

Cookies are nothing new; all website visitors have many cookies from various websites stored on their computers, tablets and mobile phones. The only new aspect concerns the recently-adopted legislation under the (Electronic Communications Act (ZEKom-1),) which has led to changes in informing visitors and their consenting to the use of cookies. If you turn cookies off, some functionalities of the website might be disabled.

The decision is yours, but cookies are there for a reason

The portal provides users with the option to either accept or reject cookies. We would like to point out that turning cookies off may lead to issues with the website, excessive advertising (since it is not possible to enforce a limit on the number of times a certain advertisement is displayed) and other issues.

If you consent to cookies but later change your mind, you will need to “re-set your decision” by deleting cookies (the instructions on how to do this for your browser are published on the links provided at the top of this page). After deleting cookies, you will again be prompted to indicate whether you would like to accept cookies. On the portal, we occasionally embed content from foreign websites in our articles. This is usually accomplished by means of the iframe technology, which means that the user is technically served with third-website content, along with their cookies. The table above already includes a few such examples, e.g. embedding videos on YouTube, which includes its own advertising system and thus sets its own cookies for viewers.

In addition, social networks such as Facebook, Google+ and Twitter set their cookies depending on whether you are logged into their services. Managing their cookies is governed by the terms and conditions you accepted upon registering in those networks.
